What is the Triple L Triathlon?
The first ever Triple L Triathlon is a sprint distance triathlon - 800 meter
swim, 20K bike, 5K run. Racers swim in the Gunpowder River at the
beautiful Gunpowder Falls State Park Hammerman Area. The bike and run
courses are along scenic roads in the park and nearby neighborhoods.
Approximately 200 athletes are expected to race the Triple L Triathlon
in 2004. All proceeds go to La Leche League of MD-DE-DC directly
helping mothers and babies.
Is it a professionally organized race?
Yes! Experienced staffers from Set-Up, Inc. (www.set-upinc.com) direct
race operations, overseeing everything from course layout and timing to
water safety and first aid. Enthusiastic volunteers support Set-Up
Inc.'s staff through the entire race, including medical personnel, law
enforcement, traffic direction, and clean up.
What else happens on race day?
The fastest three male and female finishers in each age group receive
awards in a post-race ceremony. Photographers stationed at strategic
locations throughout the race will capture the excitement of the day.
The Triple L Triathlon is a family event. After the big race, families
can participate in a fun run and dance to tunes provided by a live band.
Post-race refreshments for racers and spectators will keep everyone
happy.

stations. Ads will appear in athletic magazines and newspapers (e.g.
Runner's World) and on radio stations. Local athletic stores will have
fliers and fliers will appear in other triathlon registration packets.
The Triple L Triathlon will be listed in key national triathlon
calendars (Triathlete, Inside Triathlon, Active, etc.) on the Web sites
and in the magazines. Take a look at the Triple L Triathlon Web site,
www.lllofmd-de-dc.org/TripleLTriathlon/.
Sponsors have access to all publicity outlets. Sponsor logos appear on
race brochures, advertisements, and event T-shirts. Sponsorship can
take many forms, including race winner and random awards, race packet
giveaways, race day giveaways, food, drinks, volunteer services,
communication equipment, family entertainment, advertising, booth at the
race, and, of course, monetary donations. All proceeds go to La Leche
League of MD-DE-DC directly helping mothers and babies.
What is La Leche League of Maryland, Delaware, and the District of
Columbia?
La Leche League International's (LLLI) mission is to help mothers
worldwide to breastfeed through education, encouragement, and
mother-to-mother support and to promote a better understanding of
breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the
baby and mother. LLL of MD-DE-DC is one administrative Area of LLLI and
comprises approximately 30 local Groups, 100 Leaders, and hundreds of
Group members. ALL Area workers volunteer their time and effort; no one
gets paid to support LLL of MD-DE-DC.
Why breastfeed babies?
Breastfeeding is a natural process, but it doesn't always come
naturally; like every other human behavior, both mother and baby must
learn to breastfeed. LLL strives to give women the information and
support they need to breastfeed successfully. LLL supports
breastfeeding because breastfeeding is superior to any other method of
infant feeding. While providing optimal nutrition for babies,
breastfeeding also reduces babies' risk of: diabetes, breast cancer,
cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's
disease, dental caries, alcohol dependency, infections (including ear
infections), immunologic disorders, allergies, and Sudden Infant Death
Syndrome (SIDS). Also, Human milk enhances intellectual development and
promotes good mental health. (Scientific references are available upon
request.)
Who are LLL Leaders?
LLL Leaders are trained volunteers; they facilitate group discussions,
answer questions, and give information. At LLL meetings a diverse
population of women comes together providing mother-to-mother support in
breastfeeding their babies. Leaders give gentle, positive support to
ALL mothers whether they breastfeed for a week, a month, a year, or
more. All LLL meetings are FREE-no mother is turned away.
What does LLL of MD-DE-DC do?
Funds raised at this triathlon for LLL of MD-DE-DC directly support
mothers and babies in Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia.
The MD-DE-DC Area hosts conferences and seminars for medical professionals, Leaders and mothers, providing up-to-date training and increasing awareness.
Area outreach projects include training breastfeeding counselors, working with Women, Infants, and Children
(WIC) offices to help low-income mothers, and answering free breastfeeding hotlines (800-LALECHE, 202-269-4444, 410-526-4285).
Of course, LLL of MD-DE-DC is a non-profit organization (EIN 52-1093190, MD state sales tax 02011648, DC sales tax 52-1093190).
